The Proxy Signing Problem in African Schools
Across East Africa, proxy signing — where students sign attendance registers for absent classmates — is endemic. In some secondary schools, up to 20% of attendance records are falsified by the time records reach administration.
The consequences are serious: schools bill parents for days their children never attended, exam eligibility decisions are made on false data, and chronic absenters go undetected until it's too late to intervene.

How Biometric Attendance Works in Practice
The technology is simpler than most administrators expect. A USB or wireless fingerprint scanner is placed near the classroom entrance or at a central gate. Students touch the scanner as they arrive. The system matches the fingerprint against enrolled records, marks the student present, timestamps the entry, and optionally triggers a notification to parents.
The entire interaction takes 1–3 seconds per student. A class of 50 students can be fully marked in under three minutes — compared to 10+ minutes for traditional roll-call.
For DRAIS deployments in Uganda, setup is completed in a single day. Fingerprint enrollment for 200 students takes approximately 2 hours with one scanner. Students who struggle with fingerprint recognition (common with very young children or manual workers) can be enrolled with multiple fingers or switch to card-based backup.
